Finishing your basement is a home improvement project that can add significant value to your home. With the right finish and interior design, it’s like adding a whole new floor to your house. Who couldn’t use extra space in their homes?
If you watch YouTube, renovating your basement space seems much like sprucing up any other area of your home – but it isn’t.
Installing basement ceilings and finishing off basement walls can make the area seem livable, but it won’t take long before moisture problems start to manifest themselves. Unless the walls are properly sealed, you’ll have issues with condensation.
Water from the surrounding earth will seep into the walls, and because there is little ventilation, the drywall will remain damp. You’ll start to notice water stains, bubbling paint, and a musty smell. In time, the drywall rots away, and conditions are perfect for mold and fungal growth. Repairing the damage at this stage, if possible, is expensive. That’s why it’s a good idea to hire a professional home remodeling contractor in Plymouth MI, from the start.

The Brighton Light House originally was a residential home built on Ore Creek in Brighton. Tax records for the property show its value materially increased between 1860 and 1863, indicating the home likely was built in about 1862. The home was built in the Italiante architectural style that was popular in the United States from about 1830 to 1880. The original structure is four brick walls, measuring about 3 feet thick and narrowing to roughly 2 feet thick at the top, with a basement formed with walls made of field stone. Lumber framing (still part of the house) forms two floors with several rooms and the roof of the house. In 2016, Daniel and Anna Oginsky bought this property and started an historic renovation and conversion to its current state.
